Imagine lifting years off your face in just one week. When it comes to reducing the signs of aging, aesthetic dentistry should be a top consideration. As you get older the lower portion of your face inevitably begins to shrink, with cosmetic dentistry, we are able to drastically reduce wrinkles and return an individual's face to a more youthful state through manipulation of the tooth width and size.
An older smile does not show much of the upper teeth and worn teeth appear to be all one length resulting in the “denture smile” in cosmetic dentistry.. Luckily, cosmetic dentistry can erase the years by lengthening and rounding the edges of these worn teeth
In some cases, dental restorations can enhance the fullness of your lips and cheeks, features that tend to diminish with aging.
Lip Enhancement
Lip Enhancement . . . a dental procedure!
What would you say if we told you that you could have noticeably fuller, more beautiful lips without undergoing any cosmetic procedure? No incisions, no grafting, and how about having your teeth cosmetically enhanced at the same time? This is a terrific new kind of procedure called dental lip enhancement.
Just as the sculptor creates a believable work of art from knowing the structure beneath the surface, so must the surgeon or dentist know the three-dimensional anatomy of the patient. Function and beauty go hand in hand.
In dentistry, we have known that support for the lips is created by proper tooth arrangement. We also know what happens to the face when an individual loses some of all of his or her teeth. The subtle effect of the position of the teeth and the obvious fullness of the lips is to be considered in aesthetic treatment.
In certain situations, a change in tooth position or surface shape can enhance the position, fullness, or shape of the lips.
By either correcting the alignment of one's teeth through dental orthodontics or restorative treatments such as porcelain veneers, the support of the lips can be changed to create a sense of greater fullness of the lips.
So, if you are considering aesthetic surgery to plump yourself up, make an appointment with Dr. McKim at the Boise Center for Cosmetic Dentistry to see if she can enhance your smile and correct any underlying problems at the same time.
Botox
Dentists discover that results from using Botox are more than skin deep.
Botox, the non-surgical injection that temporarily reduces frown lines, forehead creases and crow's feet, is finding more acceptance among some dentists as a treatment for temporomandibular disorder, or TMD. The toxin reduces the frequency of jaw-clenching episodes, which characterize TMD and lead to destruction of the teeth and gums.
“Some TMD problems are related to muscle pain and other TMD problems are related to joint pain. When the pain condition is related to a muscle disorder, Botox may be useful to relax the muscle,” says Dr. Jeffrey Okeson, director of the Orofacial Pain Center and chair of the department of oral health science at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry.
In addition to treating TMD, Botox can also be effective for treating migraine headaches. Most people who have migraines clench their teeth. By treating these muscles with Botox, patients' tendencies to clench their teeth are reduced and the areas where people tend to have wrinkles, such as the forehead and temporalis muscle around the eys, are also affected. The easing of wrinkles is a bonus using Botox in the dental setting.
This option should be available to all patients – those who suffer from TMD or migraines, as well as those seeking cosmetic enhancements.

If you don't floss regularly and have poor oral hygiene, you might be putting more than your teeth in jeopardy. Studies have linked periodontal disease, the outcome of neglecting your teeth, with serious health problems.
Gum disease begins at or below the gumline. Left untreated, these infections can lead to inflammation, which leads to bleeding: your gums, previously an intact system, have become a wound, providing an open gateway for invading bacteria. Research shows that the arteries of some stroke victims are infested with dental bacteria, diabetics with gum disease are at greater risk of heart attack than those with healthy gums, and pregnant women with gum disease are more like to give birth prematurely.
With your well-being at the forefront, Dr. McKim can recommend hygiene treatments and home care practices to enhance your overall health and reduce your changes of gum infections. Your Healthy Smile is our Goal!
Do you have a beautiful smile, but worry about the black fillings on your back teeth?
Today there are alternatives to Mercury-amalgam fillings! They are metal-free fillings and are preferred by our patients. Mercury-amalgam fillings date back to the days of the Civil War. They can act like metal wedges as they expand and contract putting internal pressure on the tooth. Over time this can cause toothches, sensitivity, pain upon biting and frequently broken teeth.
Be proactive and restore old worn out mercury-amalgam fillings before a problem occurs.
The exciting thing about non-metal fillings is that they will strengthen your teeth back to 90% of their original strength. It is an added bonus that your teeth will look "natural" and beautiful!
